The idea for this album was conceived in 1998. While sitting in a dentist's waiting room, I was flipping through a copy of Readers Digest when I came upon an excerpt from Robert Heinlen's book The Notebooks of Lazarus Long:
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write a sonnet, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Recording for the album began in earnest in June 2000 at my house in Greensboro and, with the exception of the strings on "Take A Moment" (recorded in March 2001), was finished November 2000. However, a few of the tracks had been at least partly recorded prior to this. "The Choral Song" was originally recorded in January 1997. A portion of "Sticky Situation" was recorded by Skin (a band I was in) in early 1999 as a demo for clubs. "Evade" was recorded in its entirety in January 2000. And finally, "Again" & "Dry As A Bone" were recorded by Hyperfine (a continuation of Skin) for the EP Freakish Form which was recorded from April - May 2000.
