Miscellaneous Recordings

This is the page where various recordings that I have done or will do which are not on any "official" releases will be placed. Updates will be sporadic, of course, as I am inherently lazy about such things. The main purpose of this page is to get this stuff out there as opposed to letting it sit forgotten in some dust-lathered box in my attic.

  • Sherwood
This song was recorded in December 1999 as a Christmas gift for my Mother. I had intended to include it on Specialization Is For Insects, but after hearing it with the rest of the album, I decided it didn't fit and left it off. An upbeat instrumental piece featuring layered piano parts, it has been described as "baroque chamber music", but I like to think it's better than that.
  • Broken Wings (Demo)
  • Sticky Situation (Demo)
  • Fist (Demo)
  • Opus (Demo)
These four songs were recorded by the band Skin (a precursor to Hyperfine). Skin was comprised of myself, John Kirkpatrick, Rory MacCrimmon, and Jeff McRae. None of these four songs are in their entirety. Broken Wings was written by Rory and Jeff. Its a driving rock song about the life of a fly. Jeff played drums and sang the lead, Rory played the rhythm guitar and sang a backing vocal, John played lead guitar, and I played bass and sang a backing vocal. Sticky Situation was written by me. I liked this recording so much that I edited it to full length and used most of the recording for the version that appears on Specialization Is For Insects. I sang lead and played rhythm guitar, Jeff played drums and sang a backing vocal, Rory played bass and sang a backing vocal, and John played lead guitar. Fist was written by John and Rory. A heavy song; it was quite a challenge to play. Unfortunately this demo recording does not do the song justice as you really need to hear it in its entirety instead of the one minute offered here. Rory sang lead and played guitar, Jeff played drums, I played bass and sang backup, and John played guitar. Opus was written by Jeff. It's a very beautiful song and in my opinion the best recording of these four. Jeff had many songs but was very critical of them. This is one of the few he would let us play. Jeff played guitar and sang lead, I played piano and sang backup, Rory played drums, and John played bass.

This song was recorded somewhere around '97 or '98. If you take the time to listen to it, you'll discover the guitar solo sucks. Sorry about that. Overall though I think it's an excellent recording given the fact that I only had one mic and very little clue as to what I was doing. And I actually like the song too.
